  3. Windows NT
  4. ==========
  5.   The installation procedure for Microsoft Windows NT(TM) and Windows
  6. NT(TM) Advanced Server operating systems are the same. Both operating
  7. systems will hereafter be referred to as "Windows NT".
  8.  
  9.   During installation of the NDIS 3.0 MAC driver, you may find it
  10. convenient to have the Windows NT System Guide at hand. Review the
  11. "Configuring the Network" section in chapter 5 and chapter 19,
  12. "Installing Windows NT" prior to installation.
  13.  
  14.   The NDIS 3.0 MAC installation procedure described below will copy
  15. all necessary set-up files to your Windows NT "System32" directory
  16. and the driver to your "System32\Drivers" directory. In addition,
  17. several changes will be made to your registry. Do not try to manually
  18. change entries in the registry. All MAC driver parameters are
  19. settable from the Network control panel.
  20.  
  21.  
  22. Installation procedure:
  23. =======================
  24.   The installation procedure for the NDIS 3.0 MAC driver allows
  25. installation either during the initial Windows NT installation or
  26. after Windows NT has been installed on your machine. If you
  27. have already installed Windows NT on your machine, refer to the
  28. "Adding adapter" section.
  29.  
  30.  
  31. MAC Installation during Windows NT installation:
  32. ----------------------------------------------------
  33.   1 - Follow the instructions in the Windows NT System Guide to
  34.       begin Windows NT installation.
  35.  
  36.   2 - If you have chosen custom set-up, you should choose "Do Not
  37.       Detect" when the "Network Adapter Card Detection" window
  38.       displays, as there is no netcard detection module included
  39.       with the Olicom MAC drivers.
  40.  
  41.   3 - When the message "Set-up did not detect a network card" displays,
  42.       select "Continue" to go to the adapter card set-up phase.
  43.  
  44.   4 - Continue with step 4 in the "Adding adapter" section below.
  45.  
  46.  
  47. Adding Adapter:
  48. ---------------
  49.   If you are installing a network adapter after Windows NT has been
  50. successfully installed on your system, you must be logged on with
  51. administrative rights. This is necessary in order to be able to add,
  52. configure and remove network adapters in Windows NT.
  53.  
  54.   1 - Select the Control Panel in the Main window.
  55.  
  56.   2 - Select the Network icon.
  57.  
  58.   3 - In the Network Settings panel, choose the "Add adapter" button.
  59.  
  60.   4 - In the list of Network Adapter Cards, select "<Other> Requires
  61.       disk from manufacturer" and press the "Continue" button.
  62.  
  63.   5 - Enter the full path to the setup files for the desired adapter
  64.       type. If you are installing from the setup diskette, you should
  65.       enter "A:\NT".
  66.  
  67.   6 - Confirm choice, by selecting proper adapter type and press the
  68.       "Ok" button.
  69.  
  70.       The setup program now copies installation files to your
  71.       harddisk.
  72.  
  73.   7 - In the adapter configuration dialogue box, select proper values
  74.       for adapter settings. Refer to the "Adapter parameters" section
  75.       below for further details.
  76.  
  77.   8 - Press the "OK" button when all parameters have been set
  78.       correctly.
  79.  
  80.       The setup program now copies the NDIS 3.0 MAC driver to your
  81.       harddisk.
  82.  
  83.   9 - You may wish to review the binding settings by selecting the
  84.       "Bindings" button. Press "OK" to return from the Network
  85.       Bindings windows.
  86.  
  87.  10 - Select the "OK" button in the Network control panel, when
  88.       all adapters have been added.
  89.  
  90.  11 - The settings will not take effect, until the system is
  91.       restarted. If Windows NT is installed on your system, system
  92.       restart can be initiated by selecting the "Yes" option in the
  93.       dialogue box shown when you exit the Network Control Panel.
  94.  
  95.  
  96. Adapter parameters:
  97. ===================
  98.   When configuring an adapter, the following parameters can be
  99. modified:
  100.  
  101.   I/O Base Address : Must match the adapter I/O settings on the
  102. installed adapter.
  103.  
  104.   Bus Number : Identifies the bus number, the adapter has been plugged
  105. into. For single-bus architectures, this value should be 0 (zero).
  106.  
  107.   Early Token Release : Selects the early token release feature. This
  108. parameter has only effect, when running 16 Mbps.
  109.  
  110.   Full Transmit Status : When set to "Yes", normal transmit
  111. verification is performed, and the upper layer drivers will be
  112. notified about the status of the transmitted frame, i.e. whether the
  113. destination address has been recognised and the frame has been copied
  114. by the receiving station. When this value is "No", all transmitted
  115. frames are assumed both recognised and copied by another station on
  116. the ring. If you have a bridge/router in your network or discover
  117. abnormal network behaviour, this value should be set to "Yes".
  118.  
  119.   Network Address : If this entry is specified, the specified value
  120. will be used in place of the universal burned-in node address on the
  121. adapter card. Note that the entered address must be administered
  122. locally. It must be entered as "XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX", e.g.
  123. "40-00-12-34-56-78".
  124.  
  125.   The following parameters is only selectable for 16/4 adapters:
  126.  
  127.   Max Frame Size : Determines the size of each transmit buffer
  128. allocated in the system memory. 
  129.  
  130.   Transmit Buffers : Determines the number of allocated transmit
  131. buffers in the system memory. 
  132.  
  133.   Receive Buffers : Determines the number of allocated receive
  134. buffers in the system memory. 
  135.  
  136.   PLEASE NOTE: Allocating large amounts of memory for one or more
  137. adapters, may cause the driver to fail during load. Special concern
  138. must be taken, when using ISA adapters, as system resources used by
  139. the driver are limited. If you're using a single ISA adapter in your
  140. system, the following parameters has been tested to work:
  141.  
  142.   Receive Buffers  : 10
  143.   Transmit Buffers : 8
  144.   Max Frame Size   : 8 KBytes
  145.  
  146.  
  147. Using STAT.EXE to view adapter statistics:
  148. ==========================================
  149.   The STAT.EXE program is used to display adapter status and
  150. statistics. This program is placed in the \NT\UTIL directory on
  151. your diskette. In order to use the STAT.EXE utility you must have your
  152. driver installed.
  153.  
  154. The program is called, using the following parameters:
  155.  
  156.       STAT <adapter name> [options]
  157.  
  158. where
  159.  
  160.       <adapter name>
  161.       - is <driver name><instance>. Notice: There is no space
  162.       character between <driver name> and <instance>.
  163.  
  164.       <driver name>
  165.       - is the name of the driver, i.e. "Octk16".
  166.  
  167.       <instance>
  168.       - is the instance number of the network adapter installed, i.e.
  169.         01, 02 etc.
  170.  
  171.       [options]
  172.       - is one or more of the following
  173.            -c for adapter configuration. Default.
  174.            -a for additional adapter configuration
  175.            -s for general adapter statistics
  176.            -m for media specific statistics
  177.  
  178. Example:
  179.  
  180.       STAT
  181.  
  182. shows the above option list.
  183.  
  184.       STAT octk1601 -s
  185.  
  186. will show the statistics for the octk1601 driver.
  187.  
  188.  
  189. Error messages:
  190. ===============
  191.   If you experience any problems with the network, you should check
  192. if any error messages or warnings are posted by the MAC driver by
  193. using the Event Viewer found in the Administrative Tools window. All
  194. error messages and/or warnings posted by the Olicom MAC driver have
  195. the Source field set to "OcTk16" or "OcTk32" depending on the adapter
  196. installed. System error messages, related to the Olicom MAC driver,
  197. may occur with different source names, i.e. "Service Control
  198. Manager".
  199.  
  200.   The messages are enumerated by the Event field and are described
  201. below in Event number order. You can display the message description,
  202. by highlighting the message and pressing enter.
  203.  
  204. Event    Description
  205.  
  206.   1    Bring-up diagnostics failed for OcTk1601.
  207.         Action: The adapter failed during the bring-up diagnostics.
  208.         Shut down your system and retry the operation. If the error
  209.         persist, contact your place of purchase.
  210.  
  211.   2    Adapter initialize failed for OcTk1601.
  212.         Action: The adapter failed the initialization phase. Shut down
  213.         your system and retry the operation. If the error persist,
  214.         contact your place of purchase.
  215.  
  216.   3    Adapter Check on OcTk1601.
  217.     Action: A serious error occurred on the adapter, causing an
  218.         Adapter check code to be posted. Restart your system. If the
  219.         error persist, contact your place of purchase.
  220.  
  221.   4    Could not open adapter OcTk1601. Ring beaconing. Check network
  222.     speed settings.
  223.         Action: The network speed settings is wrong. Change it and
  224.         restart you system.
  225.  
  226.   5    Could not open adapter OcTk1601. Duplicate node address.
  227.     Action: A duplicate address has been discovered on the ring.
  228.         Change your locally administered address as discussed in the
  229.         "Adapter parameter" section above and restart your system.
  230.  
  231.   6    Could not open adapter OcTk1601. Request initialisation failed.
  232.     Action: An error occurred during adapter initialisation.
  233.         Restart your system. If the error persist, contact your place
  234.         of purchase.
  235.  
  236.   7    Could not open adapter OcTk601. Remove station received.
  237.     Action: The adapter has been removed by a LAN Manager
  238.         station. Contact your network administrator.
  239.  
  240.   8    Could not open adapter OcTk1601.
  241.         Action: The adapter failed to open. Please check cables and
  242.         connections and retry the operation.
  243.  
  244.   9    Could not download code on adapter OcTk1601.
  245.         Action: The download operation failed. Contact your place of
  246.         purchase.
  247.  
  248.   10    Lobe wire fault detected by OcTk1601. Please check cable
  249.     connections.
  250.     Action: Check all cables and connections and try another lobe
  251.         media cable. Retry the operation.
  252.  
  253.   11    OcTk1601 has failed the lobe wrap test resulting from the
  254.     beacon auto-removal process and has deinserted from the ring.
  255.     Action: The adapter has deinserted from the ring, because the
  256.         ring was beaconing. Check the network speed settings and
  257.         cable connections and retry the operation. If the error
  258.         persist, contact your network administrator.
  259.  
  260.   12    OcTk1601 has received a remove ring station Mac frame request
  261.     and has deinserted from the ring.
  262.     Action: The adapter has been removed by a LAN Manager
  263.         station. Contact your network administrator.
  264.  
  265.   13    The detected adapter for OcTk1601 is not supported by this
  266.     driver.
  267.     Action: You have installed a wrong MAC driver for the adapter
  268.         used.
  269.  
  270.   14    The configuration read for OcTk1601 is invalid.
  271.         Action: A configuration entry is invalid. Use the network
  272.         control panel to setup proper adapter settings.
  273.  
  274.   15    OcTk1601 has received a Trace Tool Remove frame from a
  275.     Network Management station and has disabled the promiscuous
  276.     packet filter.
  277.     Action: The adapter driver has cleared the PROMISCUOUS packet
  278.         filter bit, as instructed by a LAN Manager station. Contact
  279.         your network administrator.
  280.  
  281.   5000  OcTk1601 : Has encountered a conflict in resources and could
  282.     not load.
  283.         Action: Check the resources used by the network adapter(s) to
  284.         ensure, that no conflicts exists.
  285.  
  286.   5001    OcTk1601 : Could not allocate resources necessary for
  287.     operation.
  288.     Action: The driver failed to load, because it tried to
  289.         allocate too many resources. Decrease the number of receive
  290.         and/or transmit buffers and retry the operation.
  291.  
  292.   5002    OcTk1601 : Has determined that the adapter is not functioning
  293.     properly.
  294.         Action: The adapter could not be found or is not working
  295.         properly. Check I/O base settings and retry the operation.
  296.  
  297.   5003    OcTk1601 : Could not find an adapter.
  298.         Action: The adapter could not be found by the MAC driver.
  299.         Check I/O base settings and retry the operation.
  300.  
  301.   5004    OcTk1601 : Could not connect to the interrupt number
  302.     supplied.
  303.     Action: The interrupt is already used by another device.
  304.         Change the adapter interrupt number and retry the operation.
  305.  
  306.   5005    OcTk1601 : Has encountered an internal error and has failed.
  307.         Action: An internal error has been discovered. Contact your
  308.         place of purchase.
  309.  
  310.   5006    OcTk1601 : The version number is incorrect for this driver.
  311.     Action: The driver version is incorrect. Contact your place
  312.         of purchase.
  313.  
  314.   5007    OcTk1601 : Timed out during an operation.
  315.         Action: A time-out error occurred. Contact your place of
  316.         purchase.
  317.  
  318.   5008    OcTk1601 : Has encountered an invalid network address.
  319.         Action: An invalid network address was specified. Change the
  320.         locally administered network address and restart your system.
  321.         The driver uses the burned-in address when loading.
  322.  
  323.   5009    OcTk1601 : Does not support the configuration supplied.
  324.     Action: An invalid configuration entry was discovered. Use
  325.         the network control panel to set proper adapter parameters.
  326.  
  327.   5010    OcTk1601 : The adapter has returned an invalid value to the
  328.     driver.
  329.     Action: An internal error has occurred. Contact your place of
  330.         purchase.
  331.  
  332.   5011    OcTk1601 : A required parameter is missing from the registry.
  333.     Action: A parameter necessary for operation has been omitted
  334.         in the registry. Use the network control panel to set proper
  335.         parameters.
  336.  
  337.   5012  OcTk1601 : The IO Base Address supplied does not match the
  338.     jumpers on the adapter.
  339.         Action: The adapter could not be found by the MAC driver.
  340.         Check I/O base settings and retry the operation.
  341.  
  342.   5014    OcTk1601 : The adapter is disabled. The driver cannot open the
  343.     adapter.
  344.     Action: Make sure the startup parameter for the Olicom Token
  345.         Ring adapter driver is set to "Manual". Use the "Devices"
  346.         applet in the control panel to change the settings.
  347.  
  348.   5015    OcTk1601 : There is an I/O port conflict.
  349.     Action: The ports used by the MAC driver is already in use
  350.         by another device. Change the I/O Base address for the
  351.         adapter.
  352.  
  353.   5016    OcTk1601 : There is an I/O port or DMA channel conflict.
  354.     Action: Check the I/O port and DMA usage by the adapter to
  355.         ensure that there is no resource conflicts.
  356.  
  357.   5017    OcTk1601 : There is a memory conflict at address xx.
  358.     Action: The MAC driver and another device could not share the
  359.         memory.
  360.  
  361.   5018    OcTk1601 : There is a interrupt conflict at interrupt number
  362.     xx.
  363.         Action: Change the interrupt selection on the adapter and
  364.         retry the operation.
  365.  
  366.   5019    OcTk1601 : There is a resource conflict at DMA channel xx.
  367.     Action: Change the DMA channel selection on the adapter and
  368.         retry the operation.
  369.  
  370.  
  371. If you experience any problems, you should write down the "Event ID",
  372. "Source", "Description" and "Data" fields in the "Event Detail"
  373. window.
